Awesome! Very interesting indeed. This probably only works if the audience isn't a random bunch of armagetron players.

I was astonished to hear McFerrin say that any (interested) audience could do comparably well.
That's the bit that particularly surprised me too. For some reason when I watched it I assumed the audience was a choir or some such.

Don't mean to poke... but "every audience gets that" does not mean "every audience does is equally well". He may have been very lucky with the crowd or it may have been partially organized. In either case, would be sweet to see more experiments of similar kind...

This reminded me of the 'tune' from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Zander is one of those speakers who leave you thinking long after their talks. I ended my studies on classical music some years back, but after watching this video I wondered whether I would've still chosen to quit classical music if I had seen him earlier, and where I would be today. Very inspirational speaker, and completely dead-on about so many things...thanks for sharing :]

yeah that's the cool factor of the pentatonic scales. people feel it. it's easy to learn. and what's more: you can let people improvise using the 5 tones of the scale, and they will NEVER be wrong. you can't do wrong notes in (regular) pentatonic scales. that's why those scales are widely used to make music with children. you guys don't believe McFerrin that it works on any audience? i do regards Toon

A friend of me made beatbox at a concert of McFerrin in Germany '09. It was great!
