welkom Daft,
i you choose a server to play on, try picking one where the ping not over 100. this might help you not lagging to bad.

... connecting from Australia? I was about to propose some kind and handy instant chat responses to the usual rude "high-pinger! gtf out of here!" that will probably wait for him at any not-southern-hemisphere-server.

doh, i didn't realise you were from Australia, basically most servers are based in the USA, UK or Germany, so as you are so far from the servers you will experience alot of lag and probably alot of abuse as your ping will be quite high. I know this isn't related to your question, but, if when you do enter a server, let them know where you are from as it will explain your ping, most people will then be alot more tolerant, though there are always some that aren't, which is really sad, but you will be more than welcome on Cheers or any or the armagetron.co.uk servers , though you will experience alot of lag as the servers are based in Germany.

thanks for the replies. i don't really understand the ping thing, i was wondering why some people were calling me "daft ping". i so far have only really played on the yellow submarine for any length of time.
i have played games there with very little "sliding" too. if i was to host a game with another local (australian) player, would i still get the lag effect?
i have only really played one other online game before, and have not ever had any problems with lag.

lag is a crucial element in this game... if your ping is unstable, or it's above 100 you'll get problems hosting an online game for other australian players will not cause lag problems, except if your connection is slow or the computer running the server is not good enough. regards Toon

hi This should clear up your understandings about pings in online gaming ---> http://lmgtfy.com/?q=what+is+a+pingI understand that you said in other games you havent had this issue, it was probably because other games host many servers in every continent which drops the issue of even having to worry about getting into a hosted game nearby. Sadly, from my experience most aussie players have to deal with high pings in Armagetron because the most busy servers are in europe. However, hosting a server / starting a local game could clear your issue if you want to be completely lag free, or try american servers which still give you around 150-250 pings but is more playable than 300+ peace amz

thanks for the replies. i don't really understand the ping thing, i was wondering why some people were calling me "daft ping". The lower your ping the closer you are to the server, the higher your ping the further you are away, when you enter a server if you press the tab key, you will see a list of players and their ping, including your own. High ping = more lag, that said, i have known some amazing Australian players with a ping of 350 that are so skilled that their ping makes no difference at all. when all is said and done, it is a game and it should be fun, try and ignore people whining about your ping if someone has a high ping due to downloading and stuff they deserve to be kicked and told to stop, but if your ping is due to location, that's something you can't fix, without moving so people should be more tolerant

thanks again for the replies. you guys are by far one of the friendliest online communities i've encountered (flattery intended!)
so, as i understand it, (other than hosting my own games to local players) i should try to join the games with the lowest ping? there's quite a few with minus ping, and the armagetron(dot)co(dot)uk ones are usually in this range for some reason (and a few american games, which generally don't seem to have many players).

Hmmm difficult to give advice, cause i dont know how tolerant you will be towards sliding/lag ...
Like angel stated there are a few extremely good aussie players around, they simply adapted to higher pinged games and learned to handle the circumstances (would count for anyone with a high ping generally).
So it's up to you if you wanna try it out for a while and see if its fun on european servers or if it busts up your game completely, which can be frustrating not beeing able to play your fullest due to higher influences (lag is a female-dog).
Cheers
